  • Billiards originated in Northern Europe in the XV century and was similar to the game of croquet. The first billiard table was made in 1469 by order of the French King Louis XI. 
  • The first World Billiards Championship was held in 1873 in Great Britain.
  • The leather cue tip was invented by Captain Mingo during the French Revolution, using it to improve his game on the billiard table, which he made himself in prison.
  • Peter the Great brought billiards to Russia after his trip to Holland, where he saw this game. Empress Catherine II issued a decree that billiard tables should be installed in all hotels and inns.
  • Billiards was a semi-legal sport in the USSR, but even the country's leaders loved to play it. In the late 1980s, the All-Union Billiard Sports Federation was established, and Soviet masters were given the opportunity to participate in international competitions.
