
The history of the Gomel Football Club begins in 1959, when the Lokomotiv masters team was formed from the city of Gomel. In the winter of that year, the football team received the right to play in the second zone of group B of the USSR football championship. Then Pavel Baranov, a specialist, was chosen as the head coach.
FC Gomel is named after our city, where the club is based.
The first game of the national championship with the participation of the Belarusian club took place on April 22, 1959, when Lokomotiv played against the Avangard club from Zhytomyr. The debut turned out to be unsuccessful: the team lost with a score of 0:4.
The first goal in the championship was scored by the players of the Gomel team on May 2, 1959 in a duel against the Arsenal club from Kiev. In that match, Lokomotiv Gomel drew with the opponent.
The first victory of the Gomel club was recorded on May 15, 1959. Then the Belarusian team beat the Nistrul football club from the city of Bendery with a score of 2:1 in the national championship.
In 1961, Lokomotiv from Gomel finished in the first zone of group B of the Union championship in third place.
In 1962 FC Lokomotiv from Gomel finished the competition in the first position, having received the right to play in Group A of the USSR championship next season. In the same year, the Gomel club managed to reach the 1/16 finals of the USSR Cup.
