The memorial "Fallen for the Motherland" on Victory Square in Azov has become the most important memorial object of the city since its appearance, solemn events are held annually around it, holidays related to military affairs are celebrated. The monument is made in the form of two obelisks, fastened with a high-relief belt of white marble, at the foot there are urns with earth from different regions of the country. The obelisks are dedicated to two terrible events of the 20th century that claimed millions of lives: the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War. The memorial was opened in May 1971 at the place where in 1919 the bodies of the dead Red Army soldiers were dumped into a ravine. During the Great Patriotic War, a fraternal cemetery appeared on the southwestern outskirts of the city, Soviet soldiers who gave their lives to save the city found their last shelter here. At the end of the war, a monument, traditional for Soviet cities, was erected on it — a figure of a soldier with a banner in his hands.
In the post-war years, Azov began to return to its usual life, licking its wounds, the city changed its architectural appearance and got rid of wastelands. In this regard, it was decided to reconstruct the monument on the mass grave, build a new square in the city and erect a memorial complex on it. The ashes of Soviet soldiers were moved from the fraternal cemetery to the site of the future monument. For two years, the Azov memorial was built near this mass grave. Many enterprises of Azov took an active part in its creation, and the capital's specialists also joined in. The memorial project provided niches in which the earth was placed from the sites of the bloodiest battles and operations of wartime. In addition, in the obelisk dedicated to the Great Patriotic War, a "time capsule" was walled up — messages to future generations written in 1971.
