The second oldest attraction of Azov, after the Alekseevsky Gate, is the Powder Cellar. It is a genuine fortification of the Catherine era. The stone powder magazine was built in 1799, on the site of a dismantled wooden one, and is an architectural monument of military engineering art of the XVIII century. Powder magazine This stone building was used as a warehouse for barrels of gunpowder, with a capacity of 3,668 pounds (60 tons). It has double walls one and a half meters thick, lined with old red brick and shell stone. The total height of the cellar is 12 meters; the depth is 5 meters. Since 1967, a museum has been operating here (it was opened for the 900th anniversary of Azov). Its exposition includes samples of firearms, artillery accessories, drawings of various fortifications. The main exhibit is a colorful diorama "The capture of the Turkish fortress of Azov by the troops of Peter I in 1696". An authentic cannon of the Peter the Great era is installed next to the Powder Magazine. It emphasizes the artillery mission of this and other similar structures. Powder magazine-01.
