The building itself was built in the first half of the 19th century. Initially, it was adapted as a building for a sugar factory.
The Winter Garden is a monument of architectural significance and an important part of the Gomel Palace and Park Ensemble. The last owner of the estate, F.I. Paskevich, loved very rare plant species, and he did not have a suitable building for this. So it was decided to convert the sugar factory into a greenhouse, where rare and unique plant species were stored. Two Russian stoves were built in the basement under the building, which helped to regulate the necessary temperature for plants. The walls inside the building were lined with natural minerals, which was not only beautiful, but also created the possibility of the growth of climbing plants that created a living carpet.
Count Paskevich created a unique greenhouse. In 1888 he planted
a rare species of palm Hamerops, which grows in the Winter Garden and still. To date, the garden's collection includes about 18 species of subtropical plants. In addition to plants in the Winter Garden today there is a collection of rare fish, turtles, rabbits and guinea pigs.
