Category #nashgorod - Chapel-tomb of the Princes Paskevich

The Princes Paskevich, who owned Gomel, did a lot for its prosperity, leaving us an inheritance, in addition to historical chronicles, also an architectural heritage. The first thing that comes to mind in this regard is the beautiful Rumyantsev-Paskevich Palace.
But now we are not talking about the palace itself, but about the chapel-tomb. It contains the remains of 8 members of the princely family: Field Marshal I.F. Paskevich and his wife E.A. Paskevich, Field Marshal's parents, as well as his two daughters, great-granddaughter A.N.Balashev and son F.I.Paskevich, who actually built this chapel-tomb.
It would seem that the place of mourning should be strict and restrained-pale. But, in fact, the chapel is a miniature, fragile castle–teremok with five domes, brightly decorated with ornaments, carvings, ceramics, mosaics, gilding.
The aboveground part is the chapel itself with a height of 18 meters, the underground part is a crypt, a vaulted tunnel with a length of 32 meters. The walls of the tunnel are decorated with crushed stone with gilding, in the end there is a mosaic painting depicting angels.
