Today, in the category #nashgorod, the Gomel Cathedral of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul is one of the most majestic Orthodox churches in Belarus. It is an outstanding monument of mature classicism in cult architecture, one of the few that have survived to this day.
The cathedral was founded by the archpriest John Grigorovich on October 18, 1809 in the possession of Nikolai Rumyantsev, was built in 1809-1819 in the classical style (architect — J. Clark). It is located on a high promontory above the Sozh River and is visible from afar. The construction was finally completed in 1824.
After the revolution of 1917, the closure and destruction of churches began, and their conversion into institutions of a different category. In 1935, the Peter and Paul Cathedral was closed. Services in the cathedral resumed in the 1940s, during the German occupation. In the 1960s, the cathedral was closed for the second time: later it was equipped with a planetarium.
In the late 1980s, the cathedral was restored, after which services began to be held regularly in it. On July 11, 2008, the Peter and Paul Cathedral hosted a solemn ceremony of presenting the icon of St. Seraphim of Sarov with a particle of relics. The cathedral fascinates with its beauty and power.
