The Gomel Palace and Park Ensemble is unique in terms of a combination of factors of historical, cultural and environmental significance. The entire territory of the historical park is an archaeological monument bearing cultural remnants of the life of various epochs - from the Upper Paleolithic to the XVIII century. At the same time, the site between the ravines of Kiev descent and Gomeyuk (now Lebyazhy Pond), where the detinets, the roundabout city and the old Russian Homia were located, is the real heart of the modern city.
Gomel Park began to form in the late 1830s according to the project of the Polish architect Adam Idzkowski. The bed of the ancient river "Gomiyuk" or "Gomeyuk", which flowed into the Sozh River, was transformed into a Swan pond. The harmonious combination of relief, reservoirs, greenery, architectural elements in a single ensemble, artistic completeness in solving complex compositional and spatial problems makes it possible to attribute the Gomel Park to the best examples of park construction of its time.
According to one version, the first settlement at this place, Gomiy, was named from the Gomiyuk River. Currently, this ancient river is a beautiful "Swan Pond" or "Swan Lake", as it is called by Homel residents. This is one of the favorite vacation spots of Gomel residents and guests of the city.
