St. Nicholas Monastery was founded on December 8, 1994 at the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Gomel with the blessing of Bishop Aristarchus (Stankevich) of Gomel and Zhlobin and the initiative of Archimandrite Anthony (Kuznetsov). On March 31, 1900, employees of the Polesskaya Railway established a trusteeship that collected voluntary donations from believers for the construction of the stone church of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of travelers. Among the donors were very famous people: the holy Righteous John of Kronstadt, who sent funds for the construction and supported the guardianship with his prayers, Princess Irina Ivanovna Paskevich-Erivanskaya, who donated a plot of land for the construction of the church, and others. Four years have passed, and on October 22 (November 4, 1904), on the feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, St. Nicholas Church was consecrated. In 1930, it was closed among other churches in Gomel, but during the Great Patriotic War it was reopened and until 1990 it was the only functioning Orthodox church in Gomel.
On December 8, 1994, the first novices settled at the St. Nicholas Church. By the decision of the Holy Synod of the Belarusian Orthodox Church of March 21, 1995, St. Nicholas Monastery was established here, the rector of which was Archimandrite Anthony (Kuznetsov). From that time, monastic life began to improve: a fraternal choir was organized, parish worship gradually acquired the features of a monastery. Initially, the brethren lived in a single wooden fraternal building, but in 2000 a new stone building of fraternal cells with a large refectory was built and consecrated. In 2002, the gate church in honor of St. Dionysius of Radonezh was built with donations from believers. In the same year, a plan for the reconstruction of the monastery began to be implemented, providing for the expansion of the St. Nicholas Church, the restoration of the bell tower and the construction of a new fraternal building.
