The theater was created in 1968 from a group of puppeteers, which existed at the Gomel Regional Drama Theater from 1963 to 1968. In 1968, the theater received an independent status.
The founder of the theater, its first director and director was Viktor Sergeevich Chernyaev.
In 1986, the Honored Artist of the Republic of Belarus, Vladimir Borisovich Matros, who worked in this post until 2006, became the main director of the theater.
Alexander Chebotarev, Honored Artist of the North Ossetian ASSR, worked as the main artist of the theater.
Some performances staged by V. Chernyaev and V. Matros are still successfully performed in the theater.
In March 2004, the theater's spectator complex with a hospital for 214 seats was opened. From February to December 2007, a complete reconstruction of the theater building was carried out. Sculptures of characters from Tolstoy's fairy tale "The Adventures of Pinocchio" are installed at the entrance to the theater.
In the summer of 2021, the auditorium was renovated. The new auditorium is equipped with transformer chairs that allow young viewers to feel comfortable when watching performances. The sound and lighting equipment of the auditorium has also been updated.
The tour and festival geography of the theater covers the space from the Atlantic coast of Spain to the Pacific coast of Vladivostok, from the capital of the Komi Republic to the island of Ceylon.
The theater tours a lot and participates in International festivals, has repeatedly become a Laureate and Diploma Winner of various International theater Festivals in Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Latvia, Italy, Spain, Slovakia and other countries.
Every year, the theater shows about 300 performances, which were watched by more than 4 million viewers.
